Final Cut Pro: Optimizations and Workflows

Learn how to keep your Final Cut Pro Libraries lightweight for maximum performance and which collaboration options are available when working from Suite.

Working together in Final Cut Pro (using the standalone or Apple Creator Studio version) on Suite is straightforward and simple.

You can upload your Library (.fcpbundle) along with all associated media to Suite and get to work, or use PostLab by Hedge for a more complete collaborative workflow.

Optimizations

Here’s one core principle to optimizing Final Cut Pro usage: keep your Library lean.

Defining your Library’s Storage Locations based on your workflow will help keep that Library as small and high-performance as possible.

Library > Storage Locations

ℹ️ Take these steps to define your Library’s Storage Locations:

  1. In the Browser, select your Library.

  2. In the Inspector, go to Storage Locations > Modify Settings.

Once you save your Storage Locations, those changes are saved with your Library.

  • Media: choose a location on your team’s Suite drive.

  • Motion Content: keep this set to the default value, In Motion Templates folder.

  • Cache: choose a location on a local SSD.

  • Backups: keep this set to the default value, Final Cut Backups.

Media

When you import media, you’ll usually choose Leave files in place.

If you’re importing existing media stored on Suite, Final Cut Pro will link your new Clips to that underlying media. No new files will be created.

If you’re importing media from other sources and you choose Copy to... instead, Final Cut Pro creates a copy of that media in your Library’s Media Storage Location.

Motion Content

Keeping Motion Content set to In Motion Templates folder ensures the Effects, Generators, Titles, and Transitions used in a Library will stay in each user's default folder location on their Mac:

  • From Finder (Shift-Command-G): ~/Movies/Motion Templates

  • From Terminal.app: ~/Movies/Motion Templates.localized

Cache

Final Cut Pro stores render files, analysis files, thumbnail images, and audio waveform files for your Library in this Cache location. Since this Cache is merely an optimization layer for your Library, the simplest and fastest place to store it is on a local SSD outside of your Library.

Backups

Keeping Backups set to the default value, Final Cut Backups, spreads the load of Library recovery among individual team members.

⚠️ If your Media and Cache locations do not match your teammate’s Storage Locations, Final Cut Pro will prompt you to redefine those each time you open that Library on your Mac.

Settings > Playback

Render/Share GPU

Make sure you’re using the best GPU available for your Mac under Render/Share GPU.

  • Using Apple silicon? Final Cut Pro will set Render/Share GPU to your M Chip.

  • Using an Intel-based Mac? Choose the best GPU available, either an Internal discrete GPU (dPGU) or an External GPU (eGPU).

(Optional) Background Render

If you’re using Apple silicon (M Chip) or an Intel-based Mac with a powerful GPU, try disabling Rendering: Background render.

Workflows

Handoffs

Since Suite behaves like a local volume, you can upload your Libraries to Suite and work with your team in a handoff-style workflow.

While Final Cut Pro does create a lock inside its Library, this isn’t a reliable mechanism for collaboration on shared storage.

If you choose to work with Libraries among a team on Suite:

  1. Stay communicative with your team: who has this Library open?

  2. Once you’ve finished your work, close your Library and wait until Suite finishes UPLOADING.

  3. Once UPLOADING to Suite completes, that Library is now available for another team member to work on.

If something goes awry with your Library on Suite, here are some restoration options:

Collaboration via PostLab

PostLab by Hedge is the only platform that allows you to fully collaborate on your Final Cut Pro Libraries.

With PostLab, you create a Team Bundle on Suite, import or create a Library as a Document, and PostLab will orchestrate the collaboration for you through Library and Event Locking.

Also, PostLab allows each team member to define their own Storage Locations, eliminating Final Cut Pro’s repeated prompting for Storage Locations when Libraries are handed off.

Questions

Do I need to zip up my Library (.fcpbundle) before uploading it to Suite?

No. You can upload your .fcpbundle to Suite as-is and get to work.

Should I store my Library’s Cache on Suite?

While it’s possible to store your Cache in a folder on Suite, doing so will consume network upload throughput that could be used for another task.

Also, since a Library’s Cache can quickly grow, storing it on Suite may use up more space than expected.

Finally, since deleting a Cache is a known troubleshooting and maintenance measure, you shouldn’t view it as a permanent part of your Final Cut Pro Library.

Can I store Motion Content inside my Library on Suite?

Yes. Follow these steps from Apple Support to store your Motion Content inside your Library.

ℹ️ Each team member will likely need to activate any third-party, commercial, licensed Motion Content before use.
