Adjust your Adobe Premiere settings for smoother editing in Suite.

Updated over a month ago

By fine-tuning Adobe Premiere's settings, you can unlock a number of benefits, including a smoother editing experience and enhanced overall performance within Suite Storage. Below is a step-by-step guide to optimizing your Adobe Premiere settings.

Disable automatic audio waveform generation

Automatic audio waveform generation pre-reads all your video files to create waveforms for each clip. Having this enabled negates the benefits of reading on demand. Don’t worry - with this disabled, waveforms will still be generated when you play a specific video segment.

Set your scratch disks to a local drive

For best performance when working on Suite Storage, we recommend setting your scratch disks to a fast local drive. Under Project Settings, navigate to Scratch Disks and change the scratch disk location.

💡 Pro Tip: In collaborative workflows, it’s best to save scratch disks alongside the project for quick switching between team members. To ensure smooth performance, always pre-cache the scratch disk locations in advance!

Optimize Rendering for Performance

Allocate as much Random-access memory (RAM) as you can spare

Disable Mercury Transmit

Unless Mercury Transmit is required for playback, disable Mercury Transmit for best performance. This is a way to minimize Premiere's utilization of RAM

Disable XMP ID (Extensible Metadata Platform)

When working off shared storage like Suite, Adobe recommends turning off XMP ID to improve performance. To do this, go to Preferences > Media and uncheck:

Write XMP ID to Files on Import

Write Clip Markers to XMP

This will help reduce unnecessary metadata writing, ensuring smoother performance in shared environments.

⚠️ If XMP IDs are required for your project/production it's best to follow this best practice:

  • Open Preferences > Media and check "Write XMP ID to files on import" is enabled

  • Import the media (the ID is written into XMP)

  • Share the media files to the other editors

By importing all the media from one project, the risk of overwriting XMP ID's is minimized.

Disable "Automatically Refresh Growing Files"

This setting, typically used in live broadcast productions, can be disabled to optimize performance when not needed. To turn it off, go to Preferences > Media, then uncheck Automatically Refresh Growing Files under your Project Settings.

Media Cache Location

For optimal playback performance, navigate to Preferences > Media Cache and set your cache file location to an internal SSD. This ensures faster access to your media files and a smoother editing experience.
