Pro Tools: Optimizations and Workflows

Learn what's needed to work on a Pro Tools Session stored on Suite.

Updated over a week ago

Optimizations

  1. On each workstation where you’ll use Pro Tools, implement all steps from Avid’s Computer Optimization Guides that match your operating system.

Workflows

Creating a Pro Tools Session

  1. Launch Suite and mount your drive(s).

  2. Upload any media needed for your Session to Suite.

  3. Create a new Session directly on Suite.

  4. You can get to work in your Pro Tools Session.

Pro Tip: Importing AAFs to Create a Pro Tools Session

There are two types of AAFs:

  1. AAFs with links to external media – the AAF is smaller since you’ll link the files referenced in the AAF to media files (e.g. WAVs or AIFFs) stored on Suite.

  2. AAFs bundled with embedded media – the AAF is larger because it includes the referenced media.

When importing an AAF, Pro Tools names the Session after your AAF and creates a new folder named after the AAF file.

When importing an AAF with embedded media, Pro Tools also generates these files and folders inside that new folder with your Session:

  1. WaveCache.wfm - which grows in size until Pro Tools imports your AAF.

  2. /Audio Files - a folder containing the WAVs, AIFs, etc., needed for your Session.

  3. /Video Files - a folder containing reference video media for your Session.

Once Pro Tools completes importing your AAF on Suite, you can get to work.

ℹ️ If you know you’ll start by importing an AAF with embedded media, you may want to pre-cache the destination folder on Suite where Pro Tools creates your Session and the associated media.
