Adobe Photoshop: Optimizations and Workflows

Configure Photoshop for maximum performance and stability when using it with Suite.

Updated this week

Configuring Photoshop to use with Suite is simple and takes a few moments.

Optimizations

Preferences

ℹ️ Using a Mac or a PC? You’ll find Photoshop’s Preferences here:

  • macOS - Photoshop 202X > Settings

    • (The title of the dialog box is Preferences.)

  • Windows - Edit > Preferences

File Handling

Disable file compression when saving PSD and PSB files.

Preferences > File Handling > File Compatibility > Disable Compress of PSD and PSB Files: ☑️

Reduce the number of Recent File List Contains items.

Preferences > File Handling > Recent File List Contains: 5 files (or fewer)

Performance

Memory Usage

Reduce the amount of system memory Photoshop uses.

Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage > Let Photoshop Use: 50% (or less)

Scratch Disks

Make sure your Scratch Disks aren’t full, and you're using a local SSD for this location.

Preferences > Scratch Disks

Edit > Purge

  1. Open a file in Photoshop.

  2. Go to Edit > Purge.

  3. Choose what Photoshop will purge to free up resources for other apps.

(Optional) Disable Saving Image Previews with your Photoshop documents

Saving image previews with your Photoshop documents on shared storage is known to cause slower file browsing performance and other unpredictable behaviors in Photoshop.

To stop Photoshop from saving image previews with your documents:

Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options > Image Previews: Never Save

If you still want to save image previews but want to speed up file browsing on Suite, follow these steps to disable icon previews for a folder, subfolders, or your entire Suite volume.

Workflows

Photoshop doesn’t provide a native file locking mechanism for Photoshop documents (e.g. PSD or PSB files).

When working together on PSD or PSB files stored on Suite:

  1. Stay communicative with your team: who has this open?

  2. Once you’ve finished your work, close your PSD or PSB and wait until Suite finishes UPLOADING.

  3. Once UPLOADING to Suite completes, that Photoshop document is now available for another team member to work on.

PostLab by Hedge for Collaboration

While Photoshop doesn't provide a native locking mechanism, PostLab provides file locking on Photoshop documents along with some other workflow options.

Questions:

Q: How do Photoshop files differ from other files when using Suite?

A: While video and audio files progressively stream for playback from Suite, Photoshop files will be fully downloaded before they're opened. This applies when opening PSD or PSB files.

Q: If I wanted to try some more Photoshop optimizations, where can I find a complete list?

A: Adobe publishes a complete list here: Optimize Photoshop performance
